Question #1
For this weeks reading, I found the section on “Three premises needed for a good generalization” the most interesting. In the our text, “Critical Thinking”, by Richard L. Epstein, it lists the three premises needed for a good generalization. The three needed are as follows, “The sample is representative, the sample is big enough, and the sample is studied well”. I found that with in this section of the chapter, they did a great job at describing the concept at hand and also that they made the concept easy to understand. The way the book broke down the meaning and the easy way that they stated the three premises needed I found quite helpful. I also like the example they used. I found it to be easily understood and showed exactly how this concept is suppose to be put to use. Overall I think that the book did a excellent job at explaining the concept and found it a great way to learn what is needed to make a god generalization.

Hi Cosmo_21,
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to start by saying I have enjoyed reading your post over this semester and hope your semester is wrapping up well for you. With that I agree with your post. I too found this part of the chapter to be really interesting and really easy to understand based on the books explanation and example. Before when I would think of or here a generalization or even use one my self I would not realize that I was making an argument and that there are components needed to make a good generalization.
Good luck with your finals!
I did my post for this question on the same topic. I really liked this section of the chapter because it was one of the clearest I've read and could understand it really well. I find the concept of generalizations to be a lot easier to grasp than some of the other concepts this semester. I think generalizations are extremely common in every day life and they are necessary to describe big populations. I feel like I probably use generalizations more than I think I do, and I just don't realize it. Overall, I definitely agree with your post completely!
